https://biztoc.com/x/901e0d57b068b268We are a small business and wanted to switch POS from squareup to save transaction fees. The interface itself was the first thing that we didn't like ... But it was the waiting time to receive funds that really pushed us to want to return the $200 card reader and go back to square.
They make it VERY HARD to return the product. As I write this we still haven't been able to reach anyone on the phone. Their website has zero information on returning (saying it's simple but it isn't because they make you email then wait then call a number ...all to say they can't answer the phone.) poor customer service. Poor interface. Poor waiting times. We are a small business and can't afford the waiting games they play. Don't do it !
https://www.reddit.com/r/helcim/comments/1uqup6b/do_not_buy_helcim_pos/Helcim won't let you see your money, simple as that!
So we have a business in partnership with distributors to sell security products. We have been using Stripe for about 5 years now — it's going well — however I wanted to see what else is out there, so I signed up with Helcim.
Onboarding was smooth and the account was approved. We started taking payments, all good so far. About 2 weeks later, I got an email saying my account was closed — no warning, no document requests, nothing.
I didn't care too much since my business has alternatives, but what they did next is the truly disgusting part.
They returned ALL the money back to the customers. When I saw that, I was shocked. PayPal and Stripe never do this — they will hold the funds for a few weeks and then release them to you. Helcim paid me $0 and sent every dollar back to my customers.
I am now calling back every single customer to sort this out and it is an absolute nightmare.
https://www.reddit.com/r/PaymentProcessing/comments/1su4ndo/helcim_feedback_beaware/Edit: I heard back from Helcim, they did reach out and we had an open conversation where I shared my thoughts and experience from my side. Overall, I thought it was a really positive discussion, and I walked away feeling like this is a company that does care, but they have a tough job balancing that customer care with some really stringent verification processes. The bad actors out there with stolen credit cards and money laundering schemes unfortunately make these extra hoops and hurdles necessary, making that process suck for the rest of us.
I have more HVAC work coming up with my vendor next week, and initially I wasn’t planning to bring Helcim up again. After this conversation, though, I feel much more confident asking him to give Helcim another shot. I haven’t found another provider with better rates, and I’d rather not keep paying Square rates. If he’s willing to put in the paperwork effort, I think it will be worth it in the long run.
Original unedited post below:
I'm a small rental properties operator, and I work closely with my HVAC vendor, who's a hard working guy that built his small business by himself. I've worked with him for a number of years, and seen his small business profile grow (59 reviews on Google Maps, all 5 star reviews, very solid). He recently did a HVAC install for me, and I offered to pay his credit card fees, and we both found out he was paying 3.5% at Square (he thought it was 2.6%) and he's been losing out. I wanted to help him, so I did a quick search, and Helcim popped up as a top contender, their website was saying all the right things - next day payment, a team that cares, better rates than Square, easy transition from Square, etc. All the good stuff, and the rates were fantastic (2.4% for the transaction we were to process.) I urged him to sign up for an account, took a few days for him to get approved, and he emailed me the Helcim online invoice, I paid it, and I thought all was well, this was beginning of a new journey where we both benefit from lower credit card fees. A few days later he msged me telling me that Helcim is asking for all kinds of information that he didn't have (my credit card number, my billing address, my phone number associated with the credit card - I had made payment via the Helcim online invoice, so he didn't need my details in order for me to make my credit card payment). I provided the details to him, even though I was a bit hesitant to share my details, but since the credit card payment was already made, and he hasn't been paid yet, I just wanted to make sure he gets paid. I had a vested interest in him staying on Helcim since I offered to cover the credit card fees for his services.
A few days later, he texted me with frustration that Helcim continued to ask him for more information, he was in the attic doing a HVAC install, it was hot, and he's not getting paid, he was done with dealing with Helcim. Helcim eventually closed his account and refunded the credit card payment, and I eventually him with a new invoice from Square, with the higher fees.
I wanted Helcim to succeed, because being a small business operator myself, I support small businesses - it's tough enough to run a business without having your margins eaten by credit card fees. I emailed Helcim more than a week ago to see if they are interested in collaborating on how to better onboard small businesses, I concluded with "If Helcim is truly a company that cares, I want Helcim to know - I care as well. When Helcim loses a business as a customer, as a consumer, I also lose. I have a vested interest in Helcim to win. I am asking someone in Helcim to reach out to me, so we can both figure out how we can help Helcim win, one small business at a time."
I've been excited to share my thoughts, and perhaps even win back the hearts of small businesses, but after a week of no response, I've reluctantly given up on Helcim. Does anyone else have a suggestion for an alternative?
https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1t5k7m0/i_wanted_helcim_to_succeed_but_i_got_ghosted/After using them for 8 years, they will not let me open a new entity with them (selling household goods and decor). I couldn’t tell you why…I’m an active customer in good standing. I’ve only had 3 chargebacks in the last 8 years and won them all. I guess they just don’t like money… Anyway, rant over.
I need a brick and mortar retail POS for general merchandise (something I can scan products into the system would be a bonus or if you have a recommendation of how to streamline through another system).
And then I’ll need a new credit card processor for multiple businesses because I will not be keeping Helcim after this exchange.
Who do you recommend?
https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1wb509i/helcim_let_me_down_who_has_a_recommendation_for_a/I have been wanting to switch to Helcim for a while. Canadian company is a huge selling point.
This thread however has me a bit worried https://www.reddit.com/r/helcim/s/uwa99M5hqW
One of the factors driving my pending decision to switch is the lower fees per transaction, but all of my sales are very small. A single sale is typically 12+hst (13.56) up to a max of under $50. On a good week, I will do about 60 sales.
I do not have an online sales portal, all my sales are in person/card present.
On the helcim site rates are listed as:
Using a single bag sale as a default rate (13.56)
Visa 1.76% +.08 ($.32/sale)
MC 1.61% + .08 ($.30/sale)
AMEX 2.32% + .08 ($.39/sale)
Interac $.13/sale
If my understanding of the numbers was right, switching would end up saving money for my small business, but I hadn't factored in, or even been aware of interchange fees. With square I paid X and it was always the same.
What has your experience been with Helcim fees?
https://www.reddit.com/r/helcim/comments/1s1sorw/true_ratesexperiences_for_small_retailers/Looking for recommendations for a low-cost credit card processor with a good API
I run a small precious metals business and am building my online sales portion of my website. As such, I'm looking for recommendations on credit card processors/merchant services.
I’m looking for a processor whose payment API/service I can integrate directly into my own website. I’m not particularly interested in building my business around their POS software, website builder, inventory system, or other ecosystem. I already have my own system and mainly need reliable payment processing behind it. All of the math will be handled by my system. I just need them to collect the amount my system tells them to collect.
Cost is my biggest consideration, as it directly translates into the costs of my sales.
Precious metals operate on relatively thin margins against commodities with very publicly tracked prices. When gold is around $4,600/oz, even a 1% processing fee represents about $46 on a single ounce. Fractions of a percentage point add up very quickly when individual transactions are several thousand dollars.
I plan to pass the applicable credit card processing/convenience fee on to customers rather than burying it in my pricing, so I want to keep that fee as low as reasonably possible. Ideally, I’d like to keep my total effective processing cost under 2%, if that is realistic for this industry and transaction size.
I initially looked pretty hard at Helcim because their interchange-plus pricing seemed attractive. I also used ChatGPT to compare Helcim, Square, Stripe, and a few other options. Unfortunately, Helcim declined my application, apparently based on their internal underwriting/risk criteria, and they would not provide specific details. So that route appears to be closed.
That has also made me realize that precious-metals underwriting is probably just as important as advertised pricing. I don’t want to integrate a processor into my website only to have them decide six months later that they don’t like the industry.
Ideally, I’m looking for:
\- Low percentage-based processing fees, especially on larger transactions
\- Total effective fees ideally below 2%
\- API that I can integrate into my own website
\- No requirement to use their website/POS ecosystem
\- Transparent interchange-plus or similarly straightforward pricing
\- Support for in-person card transactions
\- A processor that knowingly accepts precious-metals dealers
\- Reasonable reserve/hold policies and predictable funding
For anyone processing relatively high-dollar, low-margin transactions, especially precious metals, jewelry, coins, bullion, or similar businesses: who are you using, what are you actually paying, and how has the experience been?
I’m particularly interested in actual effective rates after interchange, processor markup, monthly fees, PCI fees, gateway fees, etc., rather than advertised “starting at” numbers.
https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1w09gle/lowest_fee_cc_processors_with_apis/Hi I opened a tile installing company back in April 2021 after being a tile installer for a few years working for a contractor. Until now I’ve only gotten paid in checks, cash, Zelle and Venmo but I’ve been looking for a credit card processor in case a client wants to pay that way and now a potential client asked me to pay with credit card. I got the free one from paypal but never used it and their fee is something like 3.50% which is quite a bit considering this job will be around 15k. I looked into stax which was the best option but they told me cause my business is not old enough they are not comfortable with my business. So I looked into others and came across helcim, so what do you guys think about helcim or if there is a better option for my business. I bring about 30k in a month but by credit card it probably won’t be more than 15/20k at best (monthly)
https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/s4siga/is_helcim_a_good_company_for_a_card_processor/I recently switched to Helcim from Quickbooks. We currently have \~ $14,000 USD in payments that have been in limbo since the 30th and even earlier.
We used EFT payments with Quickbooks and they took 1-3 business days.
What’s normal with Helcim? If this persists I’m going to find a better provider or just go back to Quickbooks, the EFT rates aren’t that different and I can invoice from an email subdomain.
